Caring for Burmese| About Burmese | History of Burmese
Most breeders have their own approaches to the feeding and care of Burmese and should provide you with complete instructions on caring for your pet. Even so, there are a number of guidelines to keep in mind:
* Do not feed milk to your cat or kitten. Most cats cannot tolerate the lactose in milk. Cats do not require milk to be healthy.
* Always provide plenty of fresh, clean water in a clean bowl. A metal or glass bowl is best; plastic bowls become scratched over time and can become difficult to clean properly.
* Scratching posts should be available for exercise and scratching alternatives. Choose a post that has a sturdy base that does not tip. Providing scratching material will reduce the likelihood that your pet will scratch your furniture. Scratching posts are available with many surface textures, including carpet, sisal rope, cardboard, and natural wood. Your breeder may have used one type in the cattery; ask your breeder for a recommendation.
* Avoid giving food products with onions to your cat or kitten. This includes any meat-flavored baby food that you may give a treat or any table food as well. Be sure that you read any baby food label carefully -- onion powder may lurk as "spices" in the ingredients.
* A clean litter box with fresh litter is a must. Remove solid material daily and clean the pan weekly.
* Regular veterinary check- ups are essential to a healthy Burmese. Annual vaccinations and exams will ensure your pet's long and healthy life.
* Dental care is an important part of health are for your pet. You can brush your cat's teeth with a commercially-available toothbrush and toothpaste designed specifically for cats. Do not use "people" toothpaste. Be sure to have your cat's teeth cleaned according to your veterinarian's recommendations.
With regular care and lots of love, your Burmese should provide you with years of love and companionship.
