Burmese Kitten Information Project
NABB has joined forces with Dr. Susan Little in a new research project entitled the Burmese Kitten Information Project. Prompted by the need for research on Flat Chested Kittens, Dr. Susan has proposed a one year prospective study for the Burmese breed. The Burmese breed was chosen because FCK is known to occur with some frequency in the breed.
This study will begin June 1, 2003 and will focus on gathering data on various health parameters as well as the occurrence of the various defects and illnesses we see in the breed. Data that will be collected includes information such as the number of live kittens born, gender, number of live kittens at specific intervals, causes of death and illness as well as information on the queen and tom.
The goal of this study is not to prove or disprove that the Burmese breed is afflicted with FCK or any other defect, it is to determine the overall health status of the breed and allow us to answer important questions about the health of our breed. That information will be useful to us in the future and may help us to identify, manage and eliminate certain defects. A study like this could even help us to identify defects that were not thought to be inherited. In the bigger picture, this type of study may help identify the mechanism of inheritance of Flat Chested Kittens.
I encourage all Burmese breeders to participate in this study. All breeder's names, cattery names and information submitted is strictly confidential in order to encourage honest reporting of health parameters. For the information to be most useful, a minimum of 100 litters and 400 kittens must be recorded. Participation is limited to breeders only from North America and only those breeding Burmese. European Burmese will not be included in the study due to the fact that large databases of information on Burmese exist in the UK. Participation is made extremely easy with multiple avenues available for information submission. The easiest being directly on the project website! Dr. Susan makes it easy to participate. You can view the full project on her website at www.catvet.homestead.com/Burmese1.html
The NABB Liaison for this project is Donna Stewart. She will be available to answer questions about the project and she will be working closely with Dr Susan. Any specific questions about the project or participation can be directed to Donna at brenwood@earthlink.net or to Dr. Susan Little at SusanLittleDVM@compuserve.com
This is such an exciting opportunity for the Burmese breed and I hope all breeders take advantage of this and participate.
