Dual Names

In the early years of the Burmese breed, it was common to show in several associations. It was even more common to change the cat’s name between associations, and even owners, which makes it really hard to know who’s who. You will see some cats with a number of asterisks after their names, to indicate that we know it was shown under more than one name. The asterisks are repeated after the reg#, with the cat’s alternate name given after its reg#.

Certification Decoder

This may feel like more than you ever wanted to know about building a database, but it will prove valuable to you in assuring you which data are absolutely solid gold.
h -- stands for Herman. An h means that the name, spelling, titles and reg# have been verified with Herman. (I call it Hermanizing!)
no h -- no listing in Herman. This could mean that the cat simply predates what is in herman, or that there could be a mistake in the reg#.
CP -- stands for certified pedigree. CP's are given running numbers in the database so that I can refer back to them if there is a question. In order to give as much information as possible, you will see it one of four ways:

  • CP-123 -- this can be decoded to read that the cat with this code in its database entry was found somewhere as an ancestor in the pedigree numbered 123 in my records.
  • *CP-123 -- the asterisk means that this IS the cat represented by CP-123.
  • CP5-123 -- the five (following the 'CP' and BEFORE the hyphen) indicates that this cat was found in the LAST generation in CP-123. The point here is to remind the reader that the parents of this cat are not certified and could be wrong.
  • CP-25,161 -- this has to do with the fact that some CP's do not include dob, and in another CP, the cat's dob gets picked up, so both pedigrees are noted.

DMrpt -- this cat was taken from a DM report (and unless it's been found somewhere else, one of the parents will likely be missing, as DM reports relate to the progeny of either sire or dam, not both).
par rpt -- CFA will sell the parents of a cat with a reg#, if it is in their database, so this designates that source of certification.
catt rpt -- data certified via cattery report. Please note that the CFA database is mainly complete starting from about 1980 onward. Older cats may or may not be in the CFA database and therefore for the older catteries, some of their cats may not be on their cattery report. There are many, just not all, older cats in CFA's database because CP's were ordered on them at one time.
off rpt -- data certified from offspring report.
SB 92 -- indicates that the data was certified from one of CFA's old studbooks. Some typos may prevail, since these were all hand-typed at the end of the year and obviously mistakes do get made with that method.
CFF SB or ACA SB -- same as above, just a different registration body's studbook.
catl -- data was taken from a show catalog--so believe at your own risk, since we know how easy it is to see mistakes in catalogs.
regslip -- data taken from a registration slip.
litr reg -- data taken from a litter registration.
82YB -- data taken from a particular year's yearbook; not necessarily accurate.
blank (no notation present) -- taken from copies of pedigrees, notes, etc. Subject to the same provisos as non-CFA certified data.
newsl -- taken from a listing in the NABB newsletter.
epoints -- seen in the epoints announcement.
Glnd -- data found in the cat room of the Glendale Library.
Cats Mag -- data found in ancient copies of Cats Mags.
